Academic Assistant

Schedule: weekdays ; on-site

POSITION SUMMARY  

The VIVA School is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Academic Assistant to join our growing team! The Academic Assistant supports students enrolled in VIVA’s onsite, online secondary education program designed to meet the dual artistic and academic needs of developing young artists, in partnership with Laurel Springs School. The Academic Assistant's primary responsibility will be to provide academic support and assistance to students in various subjects, with a specific focus on English Language Arts (ELA). The Academic Assistant will work closely with students, LSS teachers, tutors and VIVA staff to ensure a successful learning experience for each student. Ideal candidates are passionate about supporting students' academic growth and fostering a love for learning.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supervise student engagement during academic hours.

  • Assist students in understanding and completing assignments, projects, and coursework across different subjects.

  • Identify individual learning needs and develop personalized strategies to enhance student understanding and academic performance.

  • Monitor student progress, offer feedback, and provide additional resources or practice materials as needed.

  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director & Student Life Manager to align support strategies with classroom objectives.

  • Offer specialized assistance in English Language Arts, including reading comprehension, writing skills, grammar, and vocabulary.

  • Guide students in analyzing literature, writing essays, and improving overall communication skills.

  • Provide feedback on written assignments, offering constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.

  • Maintain regular communication with students, VIVA staff and tutors to ensure a holistic approach to student support.

  • Schedule and coordinate student tutoring.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable seeking assistance and expressing their concerns.

  • Maintain and manage inventory of books, educational materials, resources and supplies.

  • Keep accurate records of student progress, including assessment results, intervention strategies, and achievement milestones.

  • Prepare academic reports, records and statistical statements as required by the Artistic & Executive Director.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE 

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and abilities:

  • Resides in the U.S.

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English, or a related field (Master's degree preferred)

  • Prior experience in education, teaching, tutoring, or academic support

  • Strong knowledge of ELA concepts, including reading strategies, writing techniques, grammar rules, and vocabulary development

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

  • Empathy and patience in working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities

  • Familiarity with online learning platforms and educational technology tools is an added benefit

  • Passionate about the advancement of students of color, the importance of arts and culture, and innovative approaches to education
